Bio-IT World recently conducted two separate surveys to gain a greater understanding of the potential opportunities and obstacles with regard to advancing the use of next-generation sequencing technologies, services and processes globally among pharma companies, biotechs, and research-based academic institutions and hospitals.

The results of the surveys were published in a study entitled The Future of Next-Gen Sequencing, which reveals some interesting insights from 1,400 survey respondents around NGS platform usage, applications, and technology infrastructure.

I believe that using NGS to identify critical discoveries or information much faster or more comprehensively than is possible from any other approach will help advance NGS technologies to a new level of broad acceptance in the larger community.  For example, with the recent E. coli outbreak in Germany this past spring, we all got a small taste of some of the capabilities of NGS in identifying the culprit organism for the outbreak.  However, we need to get answers faster and more completely to assist with the follow up of outbreaks like this in the future.  This is one of many examples of areas where NGS could be shown to be a breakthrough technology.  So, really applying NGS to solve real world human problems would be a key event to support a breakthrough in the broader community.
