We are designing and using cloud based (Amazon Web Services) solutions for more than 3 years and in my opinion is the best solution for the majority of the projects.

Anyway, the three options that you mention (web, cloud and desktop) can many times be integrated in a project, they are not exclusive.

Eduardo, do you think cloud-based solutions will fit labs and organizations of all shapes and sizes? Are there reasons for not choosing a cloud solution when a locally residing client server app is plausible?

Have the privacy concerns of the cloud been sufficiently addressed in the recent years?

Recent rapid proliferation of DNA sequencing instruments has enabled any

investigator, for a modest cost, to produce enormous amounts of sequence data.

However, working with these raw sequences presents significant problems for

individual investigators, small labs, or core facilities. For an experimental group with no

computational expertise, simply running a data analysis program is a barrier, let alone

building a compute and data storage infrastructure capable of dealing with this scale of

data data. Fortunately, a computational model – “Cloud computing” – has emerged that

is ideally suited to the analysis of large-scale sequence data. However, formidable

challenges need to be addressed to make these resources available to individual

Hi Eduardo,

Could you give me more information on cloud computing on amazon and how you use it for research?
